South Texas Slugfest opens Thursday

Ten baseball games at each of four fields will be coming up over the next three days. Twenty teams will be competing in the 2026 South Texas Slugfest, hosted by Hondo, Somerset, and Devine High Schools, along with first-time host, San Antonio McCollum, with games to be played at Tejeda Field.

Five teams will be based at each of the four fields from Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 26-28. Each venue will host four games today, with three each on Friday and Saturday. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. today, and at 10 a.m. the next two days.

It’s not a tournament format, since teams aren’t moving on to championship or consolation brackets. It’s merely an opportunity for teams to get in a lot of non-district work in a round-robin format.

At Hondo’s Bridges Field, Pool 1 will consist of Hondo, Pearsall, Zapata, Palestine and Lockhart. Hondo will play twice today at 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday, at 3 p.m. both days.

Tejeda Field will be the site for Pool 2, with McCollum playing host to Uvalde, Laredo Cigarroa and SA schools, Edison and Holmes.

Pool 3 teams at Somerset include the host Bulldogs, Eagle Pass Winn, and SA schools, Holy Cross, Brennan and LEE.

In Pool 4 with Devine are Boerne Geneva, Bandera, and SA teams Antonian and the Reagan JV.

Next weekend, the Owls will go to the Pearsall tournament for their final tourney action of the season.
