Five Hondo High School seniors participated in the South Texas Coaches Association All-Star games in volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, and football on Saturday at Floresville High School.

Hondo’s Derek Rivera was not only a member of the blue team in the boys’ basketball game, but was also the leading scorer, earning game MVP honors, and a $1,000 scholarship from STCA. He is believed to be the first Hondo athlete ever named MVP of a postseason all-star contest.

AJ Gutierrez represented the Owls as a member of the blue team in the volleyball game; Maddy Leyva competed for the blue team – and Hondo head coach Bailey Catalani  – in the girls’ basketball all-star game; and in football, Jeremiah Guevara and Gabriel Sanchez competed for the victorious red team Saturday night at Eschenburg Field.
