Hondo, D’Hanis bands march in Alamodome next week

Beeville -- Hondo’s Mighty Owl Band locked down its fifth consecutive trip to the UIL State Marching Contest, thanks to a third-place finish Saturday at the 3A Area E Contest, held at Beeville’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Overall, it’s Hondo’s 11th trip to the state contest, which, for Conference 3A, will be held again this year at the Alamodome in San Antonio, next Wednesday, Nov. 12. 

As one of 26 bands in the area contest, the MOB was one of 10 bands to reach the finals, with the top five advancing to state. Hondo placed third in the finals, finishing behind area champion Raymondville and runner-up Jourdanton. Orange Grove and Lytle finished fourth and fifth. The MOB also finished third in prelims. 

The UIL State Contest will feature 24 3A bands, starting at 9 a.m., with the MOB scheduled to perform as the final band in prelims, stepping off at 3:45. Lytle, making its second straight trip to the Alamodome, will perform at 1 p.m.

After the announcement of results for the prelims at 4:15 p.m., the top 10 finishing bands will return for the finals, beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Also from Region XI, Natalia placed 12th at Area, Poteet was 15th, Cotulla 16th, Crystal City 19th and Dilley 24th.

The State Marching Contest is being held over a two-week period, with 2A, 4A and 6A competing in the Alamodome this week, while 1A, 3A and 5A qualifiers are going to state on Nov. 10-12. 

D’Hanis, which qualified for the 1A State competition by earning a Division I rating at the Region XI contest in Hondo on Oct. 18, will perform in the Alamodome on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 9:30 a.m., the third of the 14 total bands in the 1A State contest. Leakey will step off at noon. The 1A finals begin Tuesday evening at 7:45.

Hondo has now made it to State competition in 2020, ’21, ’23, ’24 and ‘25. In 2022, there was no State contest for Conference 3A, as the UIL was still in its alternating years pattern. D’Hanis has advanced to state in every possible year since 2019, including ‘21, ‘23 and ‘24.
