Weather causes problems, leads to delay of hunter’s guide

Severe weather moved through the Medina County and Greater San Antonio area on both Thursday and Friday evenings.

While there wasn’t a lot of rain in Medina County, there was a good bit of scattered property damage, including roofs, barns, storage buildings, along with lots of trees. One tree in particular, just west of Hondo Creek along US  90, was believed to have been struck by lightning. A huge limb had broken off and blocked traffic on US 90 eastbound for a good while on Thursday evening.

In addition, many area football games were delayed,  suspended or canceled.

The first game ever played in Creek View High School’s Cougar Stadium, was suspended Friday night. Their game with Lytle resumed Saturday morning.

Playing at Comalander Stadium in San Antonio, the game between Medina Valley  and Churchill was stopped in the first quarter on Friday, and concluded Saturday afternoon. 

D’Hanis’ game in Austin, against Veritas Academy, had a two-hour delay before kicking off about 9:10.

The threshhold for suspending a game because of lightning occurs when lightning reaches within 10  miles of an outdoor sporting event. Hondo’s game with Ingram narrowly avoided a suspension, as lightning got within 11 miles of Barry Field around the start of the fourth quarter, but never got any closer until after the game had ended. 

One other weather incident has affected this week’s edition of the Hondo Anvil Herald. Heavy winds in downtown San Antonio damaged the roof of South Texas Press, where the Anvil Herald and many other papers are printed. Repairs were still ongoing Tuesday, when the annual Anvil Herald Hunter’s Guide was to have been printed.
