If your commute takes you on US 90 east to San Antonio, your drive time is about to get longer before it gets shorter.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has begun a $473 million project to widen US 90 from State Highway 211, just east of the Medina County line, to I- 410.Â
The project calls for 7.6 miles of US 90 to be expanded from a four-lane divided highway (two lanes going each way) to six lanes (three lanes each way), with continuous multi-lane frontage roads on each side. A two-lane flyover ramp connecting westbound U.S. 90 to northbound Loop 1604 is also planned.
The project is expected to reduce future commute times by as much as 90% by 2045, as well as increase connectivity, reduce congestion and enhance safety within the region.Â
The project will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, estimated to cost $146 million, began in late 2025 and is expected to be complete in 2030. It will widen 3.3 miles of US 90 between Loop 1604 and I-410. Phase I also includes the flyover project, constructing a roundabout at Ray Ellison Boulevard, and building auxiliary lanes along the frontage roads to improve safety and optimize traffic flow at key intersections.
Phase 2 will widen 4.3 miles of 90, from 1604 west to 211. This $339-million part of the project is expected to begin in 2027 and be completed in 2031. Also included in this part will be building two- to three-lane frontage roads in both directions, adding auxiliary lanes, putting in a westbound-to-eastbound turnaround at 90 and 211, and adding eastbound-to-westbound turnaround bridges at 90 and 1604, and at 90 and Montgomery Road.
Building sidewalks to enhance bike and pedestrian access are also planned.
