After a two-year test run in 6A, the Medina Valley Panthers will be heading back to 5A in the fall – if only temporarily – thanks to the August 2026 opening of the MVISD’s second high school, Creek View.

With a forecasted enrollment of 1957, the Panthers will be back in 5A-Division I for football in 2026. The Cougars, with a predicted opening enrollment of 1268 (only freshmen, sophomores and juniors will be on campus in the 2026-27 school year), Creek View is already the sixth largest 4A in the state.

Medina Valley will compete this fall in District 14-5A-Div. I, and eight-team league, which will keep the MVISD buses running back and forth to the border. But there are also four opponents in Greater San Antonio. They include John Jay, the lone 5A from the Northside ISD, MacArthur, the only 5A from the North East ISD, along with South San and Southside. Distant opponents include Eagle Pass Winn, plus Laredo ISD schools, Martin and Nixon. Unlike a few years ago, when Laredo Cigarroa was also in the mix, this time they are not. Cigarroa’s enrollment places them in 5A-D2, and the school chose not to opt up.

Winn and Southside, however, both chose to opt up to 5A-D1, as they have enrollments under the 5A division mark of 1870.

The football bi-district opponents for MV’s district will come from a rather eclectic collection of nine schools. From the northern reaches of Greater SA, defending state champion Smithson Valley, plus Boerne Champion. There’s also Seguin, Lockhart, Lehman HS (Kyle) from the Hays Consolidated ISD, Cedar Creek HS from the Bastrop ISD, Manor, and two schools from the Austin ISD, Anderson and McCallum.

MV Basketball & Volleyball

MV will be part of District 28-5A, the only six-team basketball/volleyball district in Region IV-5A. In fact, the only other six-team districts in all of 5A are two in the El Paso area, plus a five-teamer, also in Region I.

The only short drive in that district will be to Southside, with the other members including Cigarroa, Martin, Nixon and Winn. While there will be four border trips per team, per season, the short 10-game schedule will allow the school to try and schedule more nearby non-district opponents.

Across Region IV-5A, all basketball and volleyball districts are identical for next year.

The bi-district matchups will come from the all-SAISD District 27-5A. The nine-team league includes Brackenridge, Burbank, Edison, Fox Tech, Highlands, Sam Houston, Jefferson, Lanier, and, for volleyball and girls’ hoops, the Young Women’s Leadership Academy (YWLA).

Creek View Football

The Creek View Cougars’ football debut will be as a part of District 14-4A-Div. I, and they’ll be entering the fray as part of a seven-team league, including six schools that all have a history with MVHS. In the district are Floresville, La Vernia, Pleasanton, SA Kennedy, Somerset and Uvalde.

In the eight-team bi-district – which like the one facing MV, is an amalgam of the Hill Country and the Austin area – are Kerrville Tivy (down from 5A), Fredericksburg, Comal ISD schools Canyon Lake and Davenport, three Austin ISD schools LBJ, Northeast and Travis, plus Taylor.

In news regarding Creek View, the MVISD has named Brant Bourquin as the CVHS athletic coordinator and head football coach. He comes to the district after spending the last eight years at Montgomery Lake Creek HS, where he was defensive coordinator and head strength coach.

CV Volleyball & Basketball

The indoor sport districts across Region IV-4A are the same for both basketball and vollyeball. In those two sports, CV will be joined in 28-4A, a seven-team league with Uvalde, Somerset, Pleasanton, Pearsall, and the Edgewood ISD schools, Kennedy and Memorial.

The bi-district, 27-4A, consists of Bandera, Fredericksburg, Wimberly, Tivy, Canyon Lake and Davenport.

Realignments for all other UIL activities will be released sometime before the end of March.
