Local teams start fast in All-Star tournaments

All Hondo, D’Hanis and Sabinal Little League All-Star teams which began the Texas West District 21 All-Star Little League tournaments on Saturday, June 13, are still playing, heading into Wednesday, June 17.

The tourney, hosted by Pearsall Little League, hasn’t been without weather issues. The heavy rains which doused much of South Texas on Sunday and Monday played havoc with the scheduling of the tournaments.

As a result, most of the games to be played on Tuesday, June 16, were moved from the Pearsall Sports Complex to Hondo, which had received less rain than surrounding towns, allowing the fields time to dry out. Hondo’s LL fields on Avenue U and at the airport, along with Hondo ISD fields, were put into use on Tuesday.

Five of the six Hondo teams which have begun play all remained undefeated in the double-elimination tourneys after Tuesday night action.

Two Hondo teams were due back in action on Wednesday, after the Anvil Herald press deadline for the week.

In Minor Division baseball (age 8-10), Hondo won its opener over Poteet, and was scheduled to face Lytle on Wednesday. Win or lose, Hondo would play again Thursday, June 18.

Hondo Junior baseball (age 13-14) has scored early wins over Pearsall and Natalia, and was also set to play Lytle on Wednesday.

Senior baseball (age 15-16) opened its four-team bracket with a win over Pleasanton, and will face Pearsall tonight at 6 p.m.

Hondo’s two softball teams which have begun play are both undefeated heading into the weekend. 

In the Minor Division, Hondo has defeated Devine and Natalia to reach a Sunday afternoon battle with D’Hanis, which has beaten Uvalde and Pleasanton. The teams will play at 2 p.m. with a guaranteed spot in the finals on the line.

In Majors (age 11-12), Hondo has an opening round win over Somerset, while D’Hanis took down Pearsall. Both teams are still moving forward in the bracket and will both play on Saturday, June 20, with D’Hanis at 2 p.m. and Hondo at 6 p.m.

Hondo Major baseball has bounced back after an early loss to Natalia, with a win to eliminate Jourdanton. Hondo will play Thursday at 8 p.m. 

Play will begin Friday for Hondo Senior softball, when they face Pearsall, 7 p.m., at the PHS field.

Sabinal Major baseball opened with a win over Poteet, and will take on Natalia Thursday. 

The Senior baseball team from Sabinal opened with a loss to Pearsall, and will face Pleasanton in a survival battle Thursday at 8 p.m.

All District 21 tournaments are scheduled to be completed by Tuesday, with the winners of each bracket advancing to the Texas West - Section 3 tourneys.
