Hondo is one of eight ccommunities in Texas to receive a Brownfields Multipurpose Assessment and Cleanup grant.
The purpose of the Environmental Protection Agency-funded grants is to fast-track cleanup of polluted sites in Texas to ultimately bring economic growth.
Announced June 24, Hondo’s assessment grant for $500,000 will be used to conduct an inventory, planning, environmental assessment and community outreach for possible projects that might qualify for future funding through a separate grant.
City Manager John Naron said sites in downtown Hondo and at the South Texas Regional Airport may qualify for additional funding.
The topic will be brought before city council after staff members receive training from the grantee and the assessment process is underway.
More than $9.4 million was awarded to the eight communities including: Minerals Wells, $1 million; St. Phillip’s School and Community Center, $1 million; Ark-Tex Council of Governments, $1.5 million; Brownsville, $500,000; the Hiram-Clarke/Fort-Bend Redevelopment Authority, $500,000; Port Arthur, $2.4 million; and Galveston, $2 million.
