The Medina County Food Pantry, 1031 Ave Y, Hondo, continues to provide food services for Hondo area residents, according to Ken Persyn, Food Pantry interim manager.

“At the end of April, we had served 160 residents,” he said, “and we plan to continue serving 150 to 175.”

The Food Pantry conducts a regular, drive-thru food distribution on the fourth Friday of each month. Participation in the Friday drive-thru requires a voucher. These may be picked up on the second Thursday of each month at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hondo; Holy Cross Catholic Church, D’Hanis; or the Human Resources Department, Hondo.

For more information, call 830-741-9291.

“We still conduct pop-ups on Mondays. People come in and select what they want from what we have to offer on the table. At the last pop-up, we gave away 30 boxes of food,” Persyn noted.

The facility is closed on Tuesdays but open four days a week on Monday, and Wednesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Food Pantry’s official Facebook page has a new site at https://www.facebook.com/share/1EiztoWiz2/?mibextid=wwXlfr or call 830-741-9291.

As it has since its beginning in 1960, the food pantry remains committed to helping families in need as spelled out in the following:

“The Food Pantry’s official purpose is not only to help a family through crisis but also to help them move toward relative independence, thus limiting the recurrences of crises.

“Because of this purpose, clients are limited to coming for help once every three months. This still remains the purpose of the food pantry. The staff is encouraged to help their clients find ways to overcome their situations of need.”

Volunteers are essential to the food pantry. Area churches, community members and businesses continue to play a vital role by donating money and/or food items.

Members of the community are encouraged to donate time, money or food. If you would like to volunteer or need assistance, contact the food pantry.

The next regular Friday distribution will take place May 23.
