County communities plan Memorial Day observances

Across Medina County, Memorial Day ceremonies will honor fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States.

Veterans organizations encourage communities to join with them in:

• Hondo – At Veterans Memorial Park, 2000 Block Avenue M, combined American Legion Posts 524, 128 and VFW Post 3891 will conduct their annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday, May 26.

• Castroville – American Legion Weiss-Wurzbach Post 460 will have a Memorial Day Ceremony at September Square at 11 a.m. on Monday.

• D’Hanis – At 6 p.m. on May 26, D’Hanis Lions Club will conduct a ceremony at Holy Cross Cemetery.

• Devine – VFW Post 3966, 211 W. College St. will host a Memorial Day ceremony and also its annual flag retirement, for the public on Monday at 9:30 a.m. on the east side of  the Bingo Hall across from the Post Office. During the observance, South Upson Drive will be closed.

• La Coste – On Saturday, May 24 at 8:30 a.m., VFW Post 8134 will place American flags on veterans’ graves in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, clean up the cemetery, then travel to Castroville Super Walmart to hand out Buddy Poppies at 9 a.m.   

•   Lytle – At 9 a.m. Saturday, May 24, Lytle VFW Post 12041 will host its annual remembrance of fallen veterans. Participants will gather first at the Post, 1425 FM 2790, then travel to local cemeteries (Lytle Community Cemetery, Masonic Cemetery and Coal Mine Cemetery).
