State starts today for D’Hanis qualifiers
When the UIL State 1A Tennis Tournament gets underway Thursday, May 15, at Blossom Tennis Center in San Antonio, D’Hanis High School will be represented by two entries.
Both the boys’ doubles team of Wyatt Rothe/Ruger Cote and in girls’ singles, Abby Arnett, earned bronze medals at the Region IV-1A tournament last Wednesday and Thursday, May 7-8, at Bryan High School, and have earned spots at state.
Rothe went to state last year in boys’ doubles, paired with Brady Herndon, while Arnett was also at state, teamed in mixed doubles with her brother Kenny Arnett. All three D’Hanis players advancing this year are seniors.
State competition will be Thursday and Friday, May 15-16, in San Antonio. For Conferences 1A and 2A, state will be held at the North East ISD’s Blossom Tennis Center on Jones Maltsberger Road.
With the top three entries in each division advancing to state this year, all opening round matches will pair regional silver and bronze medalists, while all region champs will receive a first-round bye.
Arnett will open play Thursday at 8 a.m. against Lexi Ramaekers of Nazareth. The winner will face Alysa Garcia of Marathon.
Rothe/Cote will open Thursday morning at 9:15 against a team from Lenorah Grady, Knight Durham/Camden Wiebe, with the winner to face Tallon Hayes/Keegan Hayes of Benjamin.
District 31-A is well-represented at state. Kinsley Cox of Utopia was the Region IV girls’ singles’ champ. In boys’ singles, both Lawson Leavelle of Utopia and Cameron Santos of Knippa will play first-round matches. The Knippa girls’ doubles team of McKenzie Speer/Madison Speer is the Region IV champ, with the Nueces Canyon team of Schreiner Meredith/Gabriella Luce playing an opening-round match. Finally, in mixed doubles, Taylor Wiekamp/Hallie Moore of Utopia were regional champs and will have a first-round bye.
