Two big runs carry Hondo past Poteet

It took Hondo almost three minutes to get on the scorboard Friday evening, Dec. 21, in the Activities Center, but once they did, the game was never again in doubt.

The Owls routed Poteet, 57-22, in girls’ non-district basketball action, to climb to 13-6 on the year, heading into play in the Boerne tournament, beginning Thursday, Dec. 27.

The Owls will face Houston St. Agnes and Boerne Champion Thursday, and will take on Medina Valley and Eagle Pass Wynn on Friday.

District 29-AAA play begins for the Owls on Friday, Jan. 4, when the team travels to Carrizo Springs.

The Owls got on the board with a pair of Hannah Ytuarte free throws after nearly three minutes of play, but Hondo quickly built that to 6-0.

Up 14-8 with 5:40 left in the half, the Owls scored the final 12 points of the half, including seven straight points from Candace Carroll, to take a 26-8 lead to the locker room.

Early in the third period, Poteet put together a 6-0 run, but the Owls scored the next 14 points over a 5:20 span to go up 42-14 after three periods.

Hondo also scored the first six points of the fourth period on threes by Carroll and Mallory McCollum to close out their run at 20 points.

Carroll and Tyler Barnes both scored 12 points to lead the Owls offensively, with eight from Hannah Ytuarte and seven from Cindy Stanukinos.
