SCHEDULE
32nd Annual Hondo Basketball Tournament
Thursday-Saturday, December 6-8, 2012

Schedule expands for Hondo tourney

The 32nd Annual Hondo Basketball Tournament tips off Thursday, Dec. 6, at 9 a.m., with a new format in both the girls and boys brackets.

A new UIL rule which will take effect in the 2013-14 school year will limit teams to no more than two tournaments during a season. Therefore, some schools, including Hondo, are expanding their tourneys this year in order to make them more viable in future years.

The Hondo tourney, which runs through Saturday, will do away with the standard eight-team bracket format, in which every team is guaranteed three games. Both the girls and boys divisions will add one game to each teams schedule. The eight-team brackets will be split in half, with two four-team brackets. After the first round games, the winners and losers in each bracket will play. Then the teams will be reseeded into a championship and a consolation bracket, again with four teams in each.

In the girls bracket, where all teams will play twice on Thursday and twice on Saturday, Pool A opening round games will include Boerne vs. Uvalde and Medina Valley vs. Marion. Pool B first round games will include Bandera vs. Hondo and San Antonio Christian vs. Somerset. The Hondo-Bandera games is at noon.

On the boys side, Fridays opening round matchups will include, in Pool A, Floresville vs. FEAST and Cole vs. Bandera, and in Pool B, the Seguin JV vs. Hondo and Uvalde vs. La Vernia. The Owls first-round game starts at noon.

On Saturday, both the AC and the old gym will be in use all day, with championship games set for 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Admission prices for the Hondo tourney are available either for the day or the entire weekend. A one-day pass is $5 for adults and $3 for students. A tourney pass is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Marion is the defending girls' champion, while Hondo is the defending champ on the boys' side.
