Owl duo eliminated at state

Austin -- After sitting through a five-hour rain delay on Monday, May 5, Hondo’s entry at the UIL State Tennis Tournament saw their hopes for bringing home the gold cut short.
Juniors Taylor Knox and Alli Matthews, who were runners-up in girls’ doubles at the Region IV tournament, ran into the Region I champions in the quarterfinals, falling 6-0, 6-1 to Abilene Wylie’s sophomore twins, Caitlin Cramer-Courtney Cramer.
The match came toward the end of a long day at Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas campus.
The day’s singles matches were scheduled to start at 9 a.m., but were pushed back to a 2 p.m. start. The girls’ doubles match was set for 11:30, and finally got started well after that. The delay allowed only the quarterfinals to be played, with all semifinal and final action for 2A and 3A pushed back to Tuesday, which was originally scheduled only for finals.
The Wylie team, state runner-up a year ago, on Tuesday, played and defeated a team from Bellville in the semis, and then defeated Region IV champs, Sara Howard-Morgan Wilkins of Wimberley in the state finals, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Weather also delayed the start of action at Lakeway World of Tennis Monday, where 1A action was taking place.
In the mixed doubles quarterfinals, played late Monday, the Sabinal freshman pair of Ben Hawkes-Brittany Horton needed three sets, but defeated Travis Cassady-Haley Cagle of Frost, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
On Tuesday, they lost in the semifinals to Ericka Medina-Guillermo Medina of Lenorah Grady, also in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Knippa sibling pair of Ed Salazar-Ashley Salazar had won twice as of early Tuesday afternoon to reach the finals against the Grady team. In the finals, the Medinas defeated the Salazars, 6-2, 6-4.
Also reaching the finals was the 1A girls’ doubles team from Nueces Canyon, Laken Palermo-Brittany Luce, who lost in the finals to a team from Menard.
At Lakeway, where 4A and 5A matches were also being played, singles play reached the semifinals on Monday, with all doubles semis pushed back to Tuesday, along with all championship matches.
