Sabinal singles player falls in tough final match
College Station -- Adding to the long legacy
of Sabinal tennis tradition, Mikeyy Aguilar reached the state finals in
1A boys’ singles Tuesday, April 30.
Aguilar won both of his matches on Monday, April 29,
at Texas A&M’s Mitchell Tennis Center, before falling in the
championship match to Mario Garza of Ben Bolt, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Garza had also claimed the Region IV championship a
week earlier, where Aguilar was the runner-up.
In Monday morning’s quarterfinals, Aguilar defeated
Ty Agan of Blue Ridge in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
He came back that afternoon to defeat Mitchell
Parsley of Crowell, in two tough sets. He won the opener 6-4, then,
after a 6-6 deadlock in the second set, pulled away in the tiebreaker,
7-2.
The score in Tuesday’s finals was nearly identical
to Monday’s semifinals. Garza won a close match, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
Also representing the nearby area, Caitlin Rothe,
competing in girls’ singles for Knippa, also reached the finals, where
she also lost to the Region IV champ for a second straight week.
Rothe defeated Heather Henson of Poolville in the
opening round, 6-1, 6-1, and beat Shea Burkett of Borden County, 6-4,
6-2 in the semifinals.
Jessy Martinez of Junction defeated Rothe in the
finals, 6-2, 6-0.
Teams from Mason won boys’ doubles and girls’
doubles, while a team from Menard claimed mixed doubles.
