Two Hondo runners advance; teams place 5th at district meet

Bandera -- Neither of the Hondo varsity cross country teams placed high enough at the District 29-AAAA meet last Wednesday, Oct. 22, to qualify for the Region IV meet, but two Hondo individual runners did earn the right to advance.

On the boys’ side, Eddie Gutirerrez placed tenth in the district meet, running the 5K course in a time of 17:29.

Brittany Ontiveros was seventh in the district girls’ two-mile event, running a 12:52.

Both Hondo teams finished fifth in the team standings. Bandera, Boerne and Fredericksburg took the top three girls’ team spots. The same schools, with first and second place flipped, finished atop the boys’ team standings.

The top three teams from each district will advance to the regional meet this Saturday, Nov. 1, in San Antonio at the National Shooting Complex, along with any runners placing in the top ten not representing the advancing teams.

The regional meet will host all classifications from around Region IV. The 4A girls division will run at 11 a.m., with the 4A boys slated to go at 11:20.

Also running for the Hondo varsity boys’ team were Santiago Rodriguez, 13th, 17:42; Javier Alfaro, 30th, 18:57; Enrique Morales, 32nd, 19:16; Levi Villarreal, 38th, 20:11; Stephen Marroquin, 39th, 20:12; and David Rihn, 41st, 21:23.

The individual winner was Jarred Elizondo of Bandera, who ran a 16:43.

Competing for the Hondo girls were Emma Lessing, 19th, 13:21; Clare McNiel, 26th, 13:49; Mariah Guzman, 31st, 14:14; Gaby Ontiveros, 32nd, 15:06; Anhai Renteria, 33rd, 15:09; and Jolianne Maldonado, 34th, 15:17.

Josie Guzman of Devine was the individual winner, with a time of 11:50.
