D’Hanis, Sabinal represented at state tennis tourney College Station -- One doubles team and one singles player from the area earned the right to advance to the UIL State Tennis Tournament, with their performances last Wednesday and Thursday in the Region IV-1A tournament at A&M Consolidated High School.The Sabinal mixed doubles team of Ben Hawkes-Brittney Horton won the Region IV championship, winning every set they played, to earn a spot at the state tourney, which will take place at the Lakeway World of Tennis on May 10-11. Meanwhile, in the boys’ singles division, Will Lamon of D’Hanis finished as region runner-up, and is also heading on to the state tourney. Hawkes-Horton opened play on Wednesday with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Relles-Hodges of Normangee. Later in the day, they swept past Bueno-Sanchez of Benavides, 6-0, 6-0. In Thursday’s semifinals, they scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Richter-Hartmann of Thrall, then defeated their District 30-A rivals, Wawrzyniak-Lange from Mason, 7-5, 6-3 to win the region title. Both the Sabinal and Mason teams will advance to state. In the boys’ singles division, D’Hanis senior Will Lamon went to three sets in the finals, before falling to Mason’s Matt Banner, the defending state champion, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Faced with the need to win a playback in order to secure the region’s runner-up spot, Lamon crushed Bruni’s Christopher Peña, 6-0, 6-1, to earn a spot in the state tourney. On Wednesday, Lamon scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Max Reho of High Island, then made quick work of Charles Reed from Port Aransas, 6-1, 6-0. During the semifinals on Thursday, Lamon put away Kenny Cloud of Latexo, 6-1, 6-1. Lamon’s first match at state, will be May 10 at 9 a.m. The opening match for Hawkes-Horton, will be later that day, at 1 p.m. All action in 1A, 4A and 5A will take place at Lakeway, while the 2A and 3A divisions will be held on the UT campus at Penick-Allison Courts. Players from District 30-A advanced from Region IV to the state tournament in nine of the 10 available slots. D’Hanis, Sabinal and Menard had one qualifier each, while Mason had six.
