Owls splash through meet in Seguin

Seguin -- The Hondo cross country teams got out into the elements Saturday, Oct. 11, running in the rain and the wind at the Navarro Panther Invitational at Starke Park in Seguin.

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Hondo XC squads went to Bandera for the Bandera Bulldog Nation Pre-District Cross Country Invitational. Events were held in varsity, JV and junior high divisions. Next Wednesday, Oct. 22, the Owl runners will go back to Bandera, running the same course for the District 29-AAAA meet.

The Hondo varsity girls’ chose to run in the 5K event, where they were one of just two teams competing. The Owls won the division, defeating the team from Kyle Lehman.

Brittany Ontiveros led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Owls, with a first place time of 20:34. Emma Lessing was second in 22:55, and Clare McNiel placed third in 24:30. Anhai Renteria was fifth in 25:23, and Jolianna Maldonado placed eighth in 26:01.

Hondo also put seven runners in the varsity girls’ two-mile race, led by Marian Guzman’s 47th place finish in 14:52. Other runners for the Owls included: Gaby Ontiveros, 48th, 14:56; Trista Lemons, 58th, 15:43; Ariel Prevet-Willis, 60th, 15:47; Anakaren Renteria, 65th, 17:23; Stephanie Zinsmeyer, 67th, 17:55; and Lyndsey Garcia, 68th, 18:00.

In the varsity boys’ division, the only event was the standard 5K, where the Owls placed fifth out of ten teams.

Santiago Rodriguez finished 11th, in a time of 17:36, followed by Enrique Morales, 26th, 19:04; Levi Villarreal, 38th, 19:38; Stephen Marroquin, 40th, 19:42; Javier Alfaro, 43rd, 20:02; Devin Gonzales, 45th, 20:09; David Rihn, 57th, 20:30; Sean Horton, 68th, 21:15; Marquis Martinez, 79th, 22:25; and Ivan Rodriguez, 80th, 22:44.
