Dorothy Day Barrett passed away on February 19, 2008, at the age of 87. The family suggests memorials be made to the Hondo Public Library or to the church or charity of choice.

Quintin L. Bendele, age 85, of Castroville, passed away February 17, 2008. Quintin grew up in Rio Medina . Visitation Thursday, Feb. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home. Rosary Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home. Funeral Mass Friday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Louis Church, Castroville. Interment followed the Mass at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery.

Donald Charles Burrer, age 64, of San Antonio passed away Monday, February 4, 2008. He was born June 3, 1943, in Comfort. Visitation held Friday, Feb. 8, in the Chapel of the Hurley Funeral Home in Devine from 2 until 9 p.m. Funeral service conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Funeral Home, with interment following in Evergreen Cemetery, Devine.

Gonzalo V. Campos, age 82, of Natalia passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008, in Lytle. Rosary was recited Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Chapel of the Hurley Funeral Home. Mass celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 21, at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Natalia, with interment to in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Devine.

Guadalupe “Lupe” (Sanchez) Correa, age 74, of Hondo passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008. She was born Dec. 15, 1933. Rosary was led by Norma Gutierrez on Sunday, Mar. 2, and Funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, Mar. 3, 11 a.m., both at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Fr. Ken Dakin officiated the Mass. Interment was at Hondo Cemetery, Guadalupe Section.

SSGT John A. Diefenbach, USAF retired, beloved husband, father and grandfather, age 87, of Castroville, formerly of San Antonio, passed away February 21, 2008, in Castroville. John was born July 14, 1920, in Canton, IL. Graveside Service with full military honors were held Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 9:45 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Interment followed the graveside service at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Wanda Fay Van Fleet Dubray, age 78, of Yancey passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2008. Wanda was born in Hondo July 7, 1929. Rosary was recited at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, followed by Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church, D’Hanis, with Fr. Wallis J. Stiles officiating. A private interment service held later.

Jurleen Alblinger Finger of Helotes died on Monday, February 11, 2008. Jurleen was born in Hallettsville, Texas, on January 28, 1929. Visitation at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes, with Rosary recited at 9:30, followed by Mass at 10 a.m. Interment at 12:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in D’Hanis.

Francisca Trinidad Garcia, of Blanco, went to be with the Lord on February 14, 2008, at the age of 94. She was born in Hondo. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Croft Funeral Home in Blanco, with Mass at St. Ferdinand’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Feb. 16. Graveside services and interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Jacinto “Joe” J. Garcia, born on September 11, 1923, in Seguin, entered into rest on February 25, 2008, at the age of 84 years. Graveside services and interment were held on Monday, March 3, at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Manuel C. Gonzales, of Devine, passed away on February 22, 2008, at the age of 83. Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary being held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church (Devine). A 10 a.m. Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Devine. Interment followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Devine.

Mary Lorraine Hammond, age 76, of Hondo and formerly of Devine, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2008. Graveside service was conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Sharyl Ann Heickman, age 52, of Hondo, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2008. She was born in Oakland, CA, on August 6, 1956. Rosary was recited Friday, Feb. 29, at Hondo Funeral Home. Service was held Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church. Interment was held at the Oakwood Cemetery in Hondo. A memorial has been set up in her honor to help with medical bills and funeral expenses. Donations may be made to Community National Bank under the name of her sister-in-law, Melissa Wilder.

Agripino Garcia Hernandez, age 79, of Devine passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008 at his residence. A Memorial Mass was celebrated at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Devine.

Alton Gene Ilse, of Sabinal, passed away on February 27, 2008, in Medina Community Hospital at the age of 79. He was born on September 29, 1928, in Sabinal. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel in Sabinal. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at First United Methodist Church in Sabinal with burial following in Sabinal Cemetery.

Clara Bertha Batot Nester Johnson, age 89, of Castroville passed away February 25, 2008, in Castroville. She was born October 12, 1918, in D’Hanis. Rosary was recited on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home. Funeral Mass Thursday, Feb. 28, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, Castroville. Interment followed the Mass at D’Hanis WOW Cemetery in D’Hanis.

Essie Mae Grant Johnson, age 94, of Hondo passed away Monday, February 25, 2008, in San Antonio. She was born November 7, 1913, in Hondo. A celebration of her life was held Saturday, Mar. 1, at West End Baptist Church, Hondo. Interment was at Cottonwood Cemetery.

Samuel John Koehler Sr., age 89, of Hondo passed away Saturday, February 23, 2008. Sam was born June 2, 1918, in Cisco, TX. A private interment service will be held at a later date.

On February 1, 2008, Gary Ludwig Krause, age 62, passed away in San Antonio. A memorial service in his honor was held at the Roy Ackers funeral chapel at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Laura Ann “Lobby” Muennink Landers, age 79, of Hondo passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008. She was born August 4, 1928, in Hondo. Memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at First United Methodist Church, Hondo, with Rev. Andy Tyson officiating. A private graveside service was held at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.

Reynaldo M. Macias, of Devine, passed away on February 12, 2008, at the age of 78. Mr. The Rosary was held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devine. A 10 a.m. Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, Feb. 16, at St Joseph Catholic Church in Devine. Interment followed in St Joseph’ s Cemetery, Devine.

Horace W. Mann, born July 23, 1915, in Hondo, died Sunday, February 3, 2008, after a prolonged illness. Visitation held Thursday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. A cryptside service was held Friday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, San Antonio.

Maria Guadalupe Pimentel Milecky, age 76, of La Coste, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2008. Maria was born April 4, 1931, in La Coste. Rosary was Monday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in La Coste. Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Our Lady of Grace. Interment followed in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Cemetery.

Richard Rodriguez Mejia, age 57, of Houston, passed away on February 7, 2008. Rosary was recited Monday, Feb. 11, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, D’Hanis. A 10 a.m. funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Interment followed in San Francisco Cemetery, D’Hanis.

Eugene “Gene” Moos, 99, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Hondo on Saturday, February 16, 2008. He was born on November 14, 1908. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Guinn-Horger Chapel. Funeral Mass held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with Fr. Ken Dakin officiating. Carolyn Ruth Perkins, age 56, of Natalia passed away Saturday, February 9, 2008 at her residence. Her wishes were to be cremated.

Leon Mitchell Meyers of D’Hanis, passed away on February 15, 2008, at the age of 89. A full obit will run in next week’s Hondo Anvil Herald.

Twin babies, Joe Edward Jr. and Trevor Dean Oswalt of Hondo, were stillborn on February 9, 2008. The babies are survived by their parents, Joe Edward Oswalt and Dominique Lopez; grandparents, Benita and Rudy Rios, Ester Oswalt and James Dean Oswalt of Livingston; also numerous aunts and uncles. Graveside service was held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Hondo Cemetery. Services under the direction of Hondo Funeral Home.

Angelita G. Rios of Hondo passed away on February 18, 2008, at the age of 82. She was born in Hondo on October 2, 1925. Rosary was recited by the Guadalupanas at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24,
at Guinn-Horger Funeral Chapel. Mass was celebrated by Rev. Ken Dakin at St. John’s on Tuesday, Feb. 26, with burial in the afternoon at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Jose A. Robles, of Hondo, passed away on February 3, 2008, at the age of 80. Rosary was recited on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Hondo Funeral Home. An 11 a.m. Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Hondo Funeral Home. Interment followed in Hondo Cemetery.

Andrea S. Salazar, of Hondo passed away on February 17, 2008, at the age of 85. Rosary was recited on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Hondo Funeral Home. A 1 p.m. Funeral Mass on Thursday, Feb. 21, at St. John’s Catholic Church. Interment in Hondo Cemetery.

Lillie Mae “Lil” Santleben, age 81, formerly of D’Hanis, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2008, at home. She was born in Fayetteville, TX, July 13, 1926. A “Celebration of Life” was held Thursday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Kerrville Funeral Home, led by Rev. Frankie Enloe. A reception followed in the Riverside Event Center. Graveside service held Friday, Feb. 8, 10 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Castroville, with Rev. Enloe officiating.

Juan Luis San Miguel, 39, of San Antonio, formerly of Castroville, passed away February 3, 2008, in San Antonio. He was born May 19, 1968, in San Antonio. Visitation at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home on Sunday, Feb. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass held on Monday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery.

Shirley Ann Baker Robbins passed away February 9, 2008. She was born October 5, 1937. Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Dellcrest Funeral Home. Interment followed in San Jose Burial Park.

Ethel Helen Steubing Tschirhart, age 78, of Castroville, passed away on February 17, 2008. She was born January 25, 1930, in Bexar County. Funeral Mass was Tuesday, Feb. 19 at St. Louis Church, Castroville. Rosary was Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, Castroville. Interment followed the Rosary at 1:45 p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Dale Roger Walker Sr., 82, of Kingsville passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008. He was born on September 21, 1925, in Commerce, OK. Visitation Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Turcotte-Piper Mortuary Chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Funeral service held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the Turcotte-Piper Mortuary Cha-pel with Evangelist Tim Bennett officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Veterans of Kleberg County Military Funeral Detail will follow in Kingsville at Resthaven Cemetery.

A memorial service for Sgt. John R. “Bob” Ward, who passed away on February 8, 2008, was held at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 1:30 p.m.

Bessie Lea Norris Zinsmeister attained Peace with the Lord on February 6, 2008. She was born June 23, 1926, in Jacobia, Hunt County. A Funeral Mass and memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 9:30 a.m. in San Antonio, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church.
