William Arthur Abbott Sr.
    
William Arthur Abbott Sr. passed away Friday, December 7, 2001, at the age of 84. He was born in Junction City, KS on May 30, 1917.  He attended Kansas University on a basketball scholarship.  Bill loved his country and was proud to have served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.  He flew 43 combat missions over the South Pacific, receiving a Flying Cross, Air Medal, two Purple Hearts and four Presidential Citations for four raids on Truk Island.  Bill was part owner and manager of South Loop Lumber Company until 1977. An avid sportsman, he was champion skeet shooter, hunter, member of the Lumbermen's Bowling League, life member of the NRA, past president of National Gun Club and past president of San Antonio Gun Club where he was a lifetime member of the board of directors.  Memorial Service Monday, December 17, 2001 at 4:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Antonia P. Alderete
     Antonia P. Alderete, age 76, of San Antonio passed away December 4, 2001, in San Antonio.  She was born in Devine, December 31, 1924.  Rosary was at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 6, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Funeral Mass was at 1 p.m. Friday, December 7, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment followed in Hondo Cemetery, St. John's Section.  Rev. Jeff Phel officiating.

Robert Anderson

Robert Lloyd Anderson, age 42, of D'Hanis passed away December 31, 2001. He was born on January 18, 1959, in San Jose, CA.  Memorial Service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2002, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Chapel .

Eugenia B. Clement

Eugenia B. Clement, age 78, died Monday, December 17, 2001, at the Concord Care Center, Garner, 1A, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was born December 7, 1923, in Hondo.  She attended Murphy School near Hondo and graduated from Hondo High School in 1941. After graduation, she attended Trinity College in San Antonio and then worked at the air force base in Hondo during WWII.  She enjoyed sewing, reading, playing games and was known for her cooking and cake baking.  She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, UPW and served on the session. She also was a member of Homemakers Club and did volunteer work for the March of Dimes. Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner with Pastor Roger Kallem officiating.  Interment was in Concord Township Cemetery.

William Jasper Craft
    
William Jasper Craft, infant son of Todd and Elizabeth Craft of Hondo, passed away December 9, 2001.  William was born December 9, 2001.   Mass of Angels was held Tuesday, December 11, at 7 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hondo.  Burial was held Wednesday, December 12, at 10 a.m. in San Fernando Catholic Cemetery #2 in San Antonio.

Rosaura L. Flores
    
Rosaura L. Flores, Age 65, of Hondo, passed away Friday, December 7, 2001 at her home.  She was born December 8, 1935, in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico.  She was married to Jose Flores in 1974.  She was  a retired cook and worked for several Hondo restaurants over the past years.  She was a member of St. John Evangelist Catholic Church.  Holy Rosary was recited Sunday, December 9, at Dawson Funeral Chapel.  Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 10, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.  Burial was in the Oakwood Section, Hondo Cemetery.

Thomas Flores Gonzales

Thomas Flores Gonzales, age 62, of D'Hanis passed away, December 23, 2001 in Hondo.  He was born in D'Hanis, March 7, 1939.  Mr. Gonzales worked at the D'Hanis Brick and Tile, Co. Rosary was at 2 p.m. and Funeral Mass 2:30 P.M. Thursday, December 27, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in D'Hanis with Father W. Stiles officiating.

Waymeth S. B. 'Sonny' Groff

Waymeth Schuehle Burligh 'Sonny' Groff, age 80, passed away, Monday, December 3, 2001, at his rural Hondo home.  Born June 27, 1921, at Storm Hill, near Quihi.  Sonny served in the Marine Corps from May 20, 1943, to November 1945. He served in the Southwest and Central Pacific from February 1944 to April 15, 1945, participating in operations in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands and the Marianas Islands.  He was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He was a retired Civil Service firefighter. A rancher, his lifelong interests were rodeo, training race horses and hunting with his dogs.  The funeral was held Wednesday, December 5, 10 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and interment was in Quihi Cemetery.  Pastor Stephen Schur officiated the services.

Florence Mary Tschirhart Haby
     Florence Mary Tschirhart Haby, age 78, of Hondo and formerly of Rio Medina, passed away on December 8, 2001, in Hondo.  She was born February 7, 1923, in Castroville.  Florence was a homemaker and a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and Hermann Sons Castroville Lodge #71.  Mass of Resurrection was at 6 p.m. Suday, December 9. Rosary was at 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 10 at St. Louis Catholic Church.  Interment followed in St. Louis Catholic Cemetery.

Hilda Biediger Haby

Hilda Biediger Haby, age 95, of Mico passed away December 23, 2001.  She was born January 29, 1906 in the Bader Settlement.  She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church and was a homemaker.  Mass of Resurrection was celebrated by Fr. Jim Conway  7 p.m. Wednesday, December 26 at St. Louis Catholic Church, Castroville.  Rosary held 10 a.m. Thursday, December 27, at St. Louis Catholic Church, Castroville. Interment followed in St. Louis Cemetery, Castroville.

Alvin Walter Koehler

Alvin Walter Koehler, age 89, of Oak Island-Somerset passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2001 in the house where he was born.  He was born November 18, 1912.  Alvin spent his childhood and youth on his family's farm east of Somerset.  He served in WWII for 42 months in the Philippines.  In 1964, he purchased the family home and the remaining family land and moved his wife and daughters to the country.  He was a member of Harlandale Presbyterian Church.  He was a salesman for Ford Tractor Equipment at Torgerson  Co.  Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2001, at the Harlandale Presbyterian Church, San Antonio, with Rev. Charles Cropper and Rev. Steve Wilson officiating. Interment followed at Oak Island Cemetery in Oak Island.

Erna Elizabeth Leinweber Martin

Erna Elizabeth Leinweber Martin, age 98, passed away December 24, 2001, in Hondo. She was born April 5, 1903, in the home of her parents in Hondo. She worked at the Hondo National Bank for a few years and then worked as a bookkeeper and salesperson at E.R. Leinweber Co. until her retirement. Even though Erna worked fulltime and took care of her family, she found time to be active in community work.  She was a 50 year member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star and also a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.  She was an active member of the Business & Professional Women's Club in Hondo during the World War II era.  She also researched, wrote and published family history books about the Decker and Leinweber families.  She was known for her beautiful sewing and handwork, however after retirement she took up painting as a new interest and her paintings became prized possessions by her family and friends.  Alzheimer's disease claimed her later in life.  She remained at home with her sister and caretakers until it was necessary to go to Community Care Center in Hondo where she remained until her death.   Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Nogues officiating. Interment followed in Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.

George a. "Pete" Masters
    
George A. "Pete" Masters, age 76, of Dunlay passed away on December 10, 2001 at his home. He was born December 31, 1924, in Bentonville, AR.  Visitation 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 13.  Rosary recited 7 p.m. Thursday, December 13 at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville.  Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Friday, December 14 at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home followed by Interment at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery, Castroville.

Raynaldo Navarro Sr.

Raynaldo Navarro Sr., age 88, of Devine passed away Thursday, December 20, 2001, in San Antonio.  He was born in Devine on February 7, 1913.  Mr. Navarro was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.  Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Monday, December 24, 2001, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Clement DeMeersman officiating. Interment followed in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.

Eddie Naegelin
     Eddie Naegelin, age 85, of Castroville passed away on December 7, 2001, in Floresville.  He was born September 7, 1916, in Castroville.  Eddie was a farmer and rancher.  He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific.  He was wounded in action in Okinawa and was awarded the Purple Heart.  He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, St. Louis Society, American Legion Weiss-Wurzbach Post 460, VFW Lodge 8134 and the Hermann Sons Castroville Lodge #71.  Rosary was at 7 p.m. Monday, December 10, at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 11 at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home. Entombment followed at St. Louis Garden Mausoleum with Full Military Honors.

Acencion G. Pompa

Acencion G. Pompa, age 93, of Lytle and formerly of Devine, passed away Dec. 31, 2001. She was born in Victoria, Aug. 15, 1908.  She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.    Funeral service was at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at St. Joseph's Catholic Churchıs with Father Clement DeMeersman officiating. Interment followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Mamie Ripps

Mamie Ripps, age 92, of San Antonio, passed away December 26, 2001.  She was born on November 28, 1909, in Castroville.  Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at Zizik-Kearns Riebe-Saunders Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 27, at St. Dominic's Catholic Church. Interment followed in the San Fernando Cemetery No. 3. 

Elpidio Rodriguez, Jr.

Elpidio Rodriguez, Jr., age 52, of San Antonio passed away December 29, 2001. He was born October 11, 1949, in Hondo.  Elpidio was an auto body repair mechanic.  Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel, Funeral Mass was at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2002 at St. John's Catholic Church, officiated by Rev. Jeff Pehl. Interment will follow in Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.

Sixta C. Soliz

Sixta C. Soliz, age 91, of San Antonio and formerly of Moore, passed away Dec. 28, 2001. She was born in Moore, Aug. 10, 1910.  She was member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.  Funeral service was Monday, Dec. 31, at St. Josephıs Catholic Church with Fr. Clement DeMeersman officiating. Interment followed in Moore  Catholic Cemetery, Moore.

Daniel Diaz Villarreal

Daniel Diaz Villarreal, age 75, of San Antonio and formerly of Devine, passed away Dec. 31, 2001. He was born in Mexico, Jan. 3, 1926.      He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.    Funeral service was at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Fa. Clement DeMeersman officiating. Interment followed in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.



Lois Estelle Harper Warren

Lois Estelle Harper Warren, age 85, of LaCoste passed away Dec. 31,2001, in Humble. She was born Oct. 18, 1916, in Humble.    Funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, with Rev. David Mayer officiating. Interment followed at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Douglas Leon Zimmerman

Douglas Leon Zimmerman, age 34, of San Antonio passed away on December 9, 2001. Funeral service held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2001, at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville. Interment followed in Castroville Community Cemetery.
