Clarissa Zinsmeyer Donahue Ashley
Clarissa Zinsmeyer
Donahue Ashley, age 81, of San Antonio entered into rest Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002,
in San Antonio. She was born Oct. 18, 1920, in Castroville.
The path of her educational life started in what was then
called St. Maryıs Catholic School in LaCoste, then on to St. Louis Catholic
High School in Castroville, graduating with the class of 1938. Clarissa was
extremely proud of her Castroville - Alsatian heritage, dating back to the
Republic of Texas. After graduating from Santa Rosa School of Nursing in 1941,
she joined the Army Nurse Corps at Ft. Sam Houston. Assigned to the Medical
Fields Service as 1st Lt., she was required to teach basic nursing skills to
medics for both state side and overseas duty. From 1962 to 1969 she was a
nursing instructor at the Santa Rosa School of Nursing. From 1969 to 1984 she
was a nursing instructor at St. Phillip's College of Vocational Nursing. She
received her Bachelor of Science in
Health Careers from Southwest Texas State University in Aug. 1978. In 1984 she
became a Charter Member of the San Antonio Alliance for the Mentally Ill. She
was also a member of Santa Rosa Alumni Class of O41, and Charter Member of the
Women in Military Service American Memorial. Rosary was at 7 p.m. Monday,
Jan. 7, at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home led by Deacon Gene Ebner. Mass of
Resurrection was at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, celebrated by Fr. Jimmy Drennan at
St. Paul's Catholic Church, San Antonio. Interment followed, with military
honors performed by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, in Our Lady of Grace Catholic
Cemetery, LaCoste, conducted by Rev. John Mannion.

Bendele, age 88, of San Antonio and formerly of Devine passed away
Sunday, January 20, 2002. Rosary was recited at 6:30 P.M.
Tuesday, January 22, in the Hurley Funeral Home Chapel. Mass was
celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, in St. Joseph's Catholic
Church, with interment following in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery,
Devine.

Jewel Bennett, age 97, of Devine passed away, January 19,
2002, in San Antonio. She was born in Rome, GA, December 13, 1904.
Memorial service was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, at Hurley Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Keith Dennis officiating.
Johnnie C. Brooker
Johnnie
C. Brooker, age of 66, of Von Ormy, went to be with our Lord on January
12, 2002. he was born on March 1, 1953. Mr. Brooker attended
school at Southwest High School. Visitation held at 4 p.m. on
Thursday, January 17, at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South.
Funeral service held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 18, in the funeral home.
Interment followed in Mission Burial Park South.
Stanley L. Burger
Stanley L. Burger, age 93, of Uvalde passed away
January 14, 2002. He was born December 3, 1908. He built two
livestock auction barns in his lifetime, one in Hondo (Hondo Livestock)
and one in Uvalde (Southwest Livestock) where he was partner with his
brother Robert. Stanley, Robert and Robert's wife Adell operated
the auction barns for over 40 years. He was a partner all his life
with his brother in farming and livestock businesses. AFter moving
from the family ranch north of Hondo, Stanley made his home in Uvalde
with Robert and Adell. He was a member of St. Pal Lutheran
Church. Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, January 17
at Guinn-Horger Funeral Chapel, Funeral service was held at 2 p.m.
Friday, January 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo.
Interment will follow in Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section, with Rev.
David J. Mayer officiating.
Mary Kathryn Church Bush
Mary Kathryn Church Bush, age 84, of Lytle passed
away January 29, 2002, in New Orleans, LA. A member of a pioneer
south Texas ranching family, she was born September 6, 1917, in
Oakville. She was a member of Colonial Dames of America,
Jamestowne Society and U.S. Daughters of 1812. Graveside service
was held Friday, February 1, at 11 a.m. at the Lytle Masonic
Cemetery.
Maurice Peter 'Shotsie' DeCock Sr
Maurice Peter 'Shotsie' DeCock Sr., age 85, of Castroville passed away
Jan. 2, 2002, in San Antonio. He was born May 21, 1916, in San
Antonio. Shotsie was a farmer all of his life
and was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, St. Louis Society,
Belgian-American Club and Moose Lodge #2196 and director at the
Community National Bank, Castroville Branch, for the last 14 years.
The Mass of Resurrection was concelebrated by Rev. Jim Conway, Msgr.
Lawrence Steubben, Msgr. George Steubben, Msgr. Thomas Palmer and Deacon
Gene Ebner, Friday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church,
Castroville. Rosary was led by Fr. Jim Conway, at 1:30 Saturday, Jan. 5,
at St. Louis Catholic Church. Entombment followed the rosary in St.
Louis Garden Mausoleum.
Veronica Jimenez Dominguez
Veronica Jimenez Dominguez, age 87,of Hondo passed
away January 16, 2002. She was born in Hondo, April 19,
1914. She was a homemaker and a Guadalupana. Visitation was
held from 5 - 8 p.m. Sunday, January 20, at Guinn-Horger Funeral
Chapel. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday January 20, also at
Guinn-Horger Funeral Chapel. Funeral mass was at 1 p.m. Monday,
January 21, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hondo.
Interment followed in Hondo Cemetery, Guadalupe Section.
James F. Elwell
James F. Elwell, age 86, formerly of San Antonio and
recently of Hondo, passed away at the Audie Murphy VA hospital in San
Antonio on January 17, 2002. He was a proud veteran of WWII
earning four bronze stars for campaigns in Southern Europe and
Italy. He earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge and served with
the 86th Mt. Infantry. His generous and fun-loving nature made him
many friends in Hondo and San Antonio, on the golf course and in the
dancing halls. He will be missed by many, especially his best
buddy O.C. Flores (Shorty). Graveside service was held at 10:15
a.m. Tuesday January 22 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Espinosa, age 71, of Lytle passed away Friday, January 11, 2002. He was
born in Lytle on September 8, 1930. Funeral service was at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Jan 15, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church with Father Adolfo Valdivia
officiating. Interment followed in Lytle Community Cemetery.
Harry E. Filleman
Harry E. Filleman, age 92, of San Antonio passed away
January 21, 2002. He was born in 1909 in Hondo. A U.S. Army
veteran of WWII, he was the postmaster of Hondo until his retirement
from the Postal Service at which time he became the president of the
Hondo Chamber of Commerce for a number of years. He was a devoted
member of St. John's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and also the
Lion's Club. In his later years he spent his time in San Antonio
at Independence Hill and Incarnate Word Retirement Home. Funeral
service and rosary were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, at St.
John the Evangelist Church in Hondo followed by interment at Hondo
Cemetery, St. John's Section.

Vincenta Gallegos, age 88, of D'Hanis, passed away
January 19, 2002, in Hondo. She was born in Uvalde, July 19,
1913. She was a homemaker and a Guadalupana. Rosary was
recited at 7 p.m. Monday, January 21, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home
Chapel, Funeral Mass was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, at Holy Cross
Catholic Church, D'Hanis with Father Wallis Stiles officiating.

Rodolfo M. Gonzales, age 87, passed away January 28,
2002. He was born May 16, 1914. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday

Saturday, February 2, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Msgr. Adolfo
Valdivia-Aguirre officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery,
Devine.
Winifred Handley
Winifred 'Duchess' Handley, 89, of Dallas, formerly of
Sabinal and Uvalde, died January 21, 2002, at Presbyterian Village North Care
Center in Dallas. She was born June 20, in Austin. She was a
national officer of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and a member of the Loyal Alumni of
the University of Texas at Austin. A private memorial held at later
date.

and passed away on January 8, 2002 near Devine. Funeral service was a 10
a.m. Saturday, January 12, in Hurley Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at
Mission Park South, San Antonio.

Betty Faye Howard, age 60, of Devine passed away,
January 17, 2002. She was born in Devine, July 11, 1941.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Monday, January 21, at First Baptist
Church, Devine with Dr. Glen Young officiating. Interment was in
Evergreen Cemetery.

Phillip Hernandez Juarez, age 54 of Lytle passed away
January 30, 2002, in Lytle. He was born December 16, 1947, in
Natalia. He was a member of Iglesia Bautista Calvario.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Monday, February 4, at Iglesia Bautista
Calvario with Pastor Jesus Ortiz officiating. Interment followed
in Lytle Community Cemetery.
Dorothy Hovell Steinbomer Kendall
Dorothy Hovell Steinbomer Kendall, 89, passed away Tuesday,
January 8, 2002 in Lockhart. She was born May 27, 1912, in Bayonne, NJ,
and was 12 when her family moved to San Antonio. She held a bachelor's
degree in literature and a master's degree in library science from Our Lady of
the Lake University and a master's degree in Latin American Art at the
University of the Americas in Puebla, MX. She spent her life immersed in
the fine arts and in theatrical circles. With the late Carmen Perry, she
co-authored a book on Jean Louis Theodore Gentilz, surveyor, painter, engineer
and draftsman who played an important role in early Medina County history.
Before she became ill in late 1999, she had been working on a biography of Ruth
Curry Lawler, the New Orleans born historical preservationist, teacher, and
municipal judge who donated the Landmark Inn in Castroville to Texas Parks and
Wildlife in 1974. Her body was cremated. A memorial service followed in
San Antonio in the Spring.
Zola Faye Kendrick
Zola Faye Kendrick, age 84, of Devine, passed away Monday,
January 14, 2002, in San Antonio. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m.
Friday, January 18, in the Church of Christ, Hwy 173, Devine. Interment will
follow at Moore Memorial Cemetery, Moore.
Reva Jo Littleton
Reva Jo Littleton, age 59, of Spring passed away
January 21, 2002, at her residence. Graveside service was held at
2 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, at Evergreen Cemetery, Devine, with Dr.
Glen Young officiating.
Ivan C. Nester
Ivan C. Nester, age 85, of Dunlay passed away January
14, 2002. He was born in his childhood home west of D'Hanis on
January 25, 1916. He graduated from D'Hanis High School and
completed two years at Fox Tech in San Antonio. In 1944, after
working briefly for DH Buchanan Construction, Jess McNeil Construction
and Holland Page Construction, Ivan was drafted into the Army. He
served his country in the Army as a Staff Sgt in the Combat Engineers
over the motorpool during World War II. After the war,
"Nester" as he was called by many, returned to Texas, bought a
house in Dunlay and began his own construction company. For almost
50 years he reconstructed land to form tanks and dams, cleared brush,
made roads, installed septic tanks, water lines and more. Ivan
even trained his son, son-in-law and other young men to take pride in
making beautiful country more beautiful and useful. Anyone who
ever hired Ivan knew he would never leave a job until he was sure
his customer was completely satisfied with his work. Ivan did much
of the necessary maintenance and repair on his own equipment.
Often times if a tool was not available to do the job, he would design
and make his own version of what was needed. Those who knew Ivan
and even many who didn't, knew he was a "junk collector" Ivan
lived a very full and active life, but has suffered from Parkinson's
Disease for several years. As a result of the debilitating effects
of this disease, the last few years of his life have been spent in the
Community Care Nursing Center in Hondo. Funeral
service was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 17, at First Baptist
Church of Hondo with Brother John McKay officiating. Brother John
McAnelly lead the music and Madis Keath played one of Ivan's favorite
musical instruments, the piano. Nothing put a bigger smile on
Ivan's face than hearing his daughters sing. Though the four of
them had never before performed together in public, they sang
"Precious Lord" during his funeral service. Interment
followed in Holy Cross Cemetery, NE Annex.
James Anthony Oppelt
James Anthony Oppelt, age 72, of LaCoste passed away Jan. 4, 2002, in San
Antonio. He was born Sept. 4, 1929, in Medina County on the family farm.
He graduated from Devine High School in 1947. In 1956 he graduated with a
Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts with honors from Southwest Texas
State University, and 1961 he received his Masters in Education with honors from
SWTSU. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952
and was in the 1st Marine Division. He served eight months in Korea, and was in
battle at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. He was a member of the Chosin Few. From
1952 to 1953, James played football at Southwest Texas Jr. College. Thirty-three
years of his life were dedicated to the education field, which included his
years as a teacher at Burbank High School and Robert E. Lee High School,
assistant principal at MacArthur High School, vocation technical director at
NEISD, he retired in 1988 as Associate Superintendant of Operations for NEISD.
He founded the Vocational Technical Education Department at NEISD.
He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, LaCoste, lifetime member
of the LaCoste VFW #8134 and lifetime memberships in numerous education
organizations. Memorial rosary will be at 7 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 10, led by Fr. John
Mannion and Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan 11,
officiated by Fr. John Mannion, with both services being at Our Lady of
Grace Catholic Church in LaCoste. Military Honors flag presentation will be
provided by the United States Marines following Mass. A private interment
service will be held for family members in the Moore Cemetery in Moore.

Juan Padron, age 71, of Hondo passed away January 15,
2002. He was born in Hondo, June 12, 1930. Visitation was held
from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 18, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Chapel. Rosary was
recited at 7 p.m. Friday, January 18, also at Guinn-Horger Funeral Chapel.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 19, at St. John the Evangelist
Catholic Church, Hondo with Father Einer Ochoa officiating. Interment will
follow in Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
Issac 'Billy' Perales
Isaac 'Billy' Perales, age 75, of Castroville,
passed away
Wednesday, January 30, 2002 in Castroville. He was born June 3, 1926, in
Mariana, AR. Before his retirement, Billy worked in
construction, as custodian and as a bus driver. In his earlier
years, he was a volunteer with the Castroville Volunteer Fire
Department. He was also the manager and sponsor of the Castroville
Giants baseball team and a member of St. Louis Catholic
Church. Visitation was held Thursday, January 31,
2:30-5:30 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated
by Fr. Jim Conway and Deacon Gene Ebner, Friday, February 1 and Rosary was recited Saturday, February 2, at 9
a.m. led by Fr. Jim Conway,
both at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. Interment followed at
St. Louis Cemetery in Castroville.
Jesusa 'Susie' Perez
Jesusa 'Susie' Perez, age 78, of D'Hanis passed away, January
28, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital in San Antonio. She was born July 19, 1923
in D'Hanis. She worked in the rectory of Holy Cross Catholic Church
in D'Hanis for 23 years. She was also known for her delicious homemade
tamales. Rosary was held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, at Holy
Cross Catholic Church, D'Hanis. Mass of the Resurrection was at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 31, at
Holy Cross Catholic Church in D'Hanis with Father Wallis Stiles
officiating. Interment followed in San Francisco Cemetery in
D'Hanis.
Manuela G. Ramirez
Manuela G. Ramirez, age 84, of Hondo passed away on January
01, 2002. She was born March 13, 1917, in Hondo. Rosary was recited at 7
p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2002. Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, January
4, 2002. Services were conducted at St. John's Catholic Church with Rev.
Jeff Pehl officiating. Interment followed mass at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood
Section.
Regina M. Richter
Regina M. Richter, age 81, of Yancey passed away Saturday,
Jan. 5, 2002, at the McCrea Retirement Home. Regina was born on the Rothe Ranch
north of D'Hanis on Sept. 17, 1920. She graduated from St.
Anthony High School in D'Hanis at age 16 and entered the Order of the Sisters of
Divine Providence in San Antonio. During
her 34 years with the order she earned a Masters degree in Science and taught
Biology at St. Mary's High School and Divine Providence High School in San
Antonio. She also taught in a number of schools in Oklahoma. After
leaving the order she earned a degree in Library Science and became a
librarian at St. Mary's University, where she worked from 1971 until her
retirement in 1991.
The Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Holy
Cross Catholic Church in D'Hanis with Fr. Wallis J. Stiles officiating.
Private burial was set for a later date.
David W. 'Dave' Rogers
David W. 'Dave' Rogers, age 52, died Saturday, January 12,
2002. He was born September 21, 1949 and was a native and lifetime
resident of San Antonio. Mr. Rogers graduated law school and was a Civil
Trial Attorney and also served as the Municipal Judge of Grey Forest for over 25
years. Funeral service was held on Thursday, January 17, at 11 a.m.
at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North, San Antonio. Interment followed in
Mission Burial Park North.

Laura E. Rohrbach, age 95, of Hondo passed away
January 7, 2002 in Kerrville. She was born in D'Hanis, December
14, 1906. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Thursday, January 10 at
Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Pehl officiating.
Funeral mass was at 2 p.m. Friday, January 11, at St. John's Catholic
Church with Rev. Pehl officiating. Entombment was at Hondo Cemetery, St.
John's Mausoleum.
William Dale Schutze
William Dale Schutze, age 62, passed away January 28, 2002,
of a heart attack. He was born in Austin, February 17, 1939. Dale
was a graduate of the University of Texas with a degree in interior design, he
practiced designing in El Paso for several years, then Laguna Beach, CA, and
finally settled in Tucson, AZ, for health reasons. Dale was generous with
his time, knowledge and friendship. He was a world traveler, making
several trips around the world, always on the lookout for exquisite art objects
and furniture for his numerous customers and friends. His ashes were
interred at the family plot in old Rodgers Hill Cemetery in Austin at 11 a.m.
February 15, 2002. He was a very active member of Save Texas
Cemeteries Inc. A Celebration of Life Service was held at Lodge in the
Desert, 306 N. Averon Way, in Tucson, from 2 - 4 p.m. on February 17, which
would have been his 63rd birthday.
Frances Nell Siebert
Frances Nell Siebert, age 79, of San Antonio died Friday,
January 25, 2002. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, January 28, at
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, San Antonio, with Rev. Modie and Rev. Alan
Kethan officiating. Interment followed in Mission Burial Park North.
Della Ruth Smith
Della Ruth Smith, age 83, of San Antonio, formerly of Uvalde,
passed away, January 24, 2002, at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital in
San Antonio. She was born February 25, 1918, in Utopia. Funeral
service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 28 at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary
Chapel with Danny Haby officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest
Cemetery.
Robert L. Smith
Robert L. Smith, age 91, of La Pryor died January 18,
2002 at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. Smith, a farmer for most of his
life, was born January 16, 1911, in Asherton. Funeral service was
at 2 p.m. Monday, January 21, at First United Methodist Church of La
Pryor with Rev. Cathryn Coveney officiating. Interment followed in Mount
Hope Cemetery in Carrizo Springs.
Mary Ann Stavinoha
Mary Ann Stavinoha, age 54, of Castroville went to be
with the Lord January 26, 2002, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born March 30, 1947 in Castroville. Mary Ann was a
lifelong member of St. Louis Catholic Church, a member of St. Ann's
Society (past officer), American Legion Weiss-Wurzbach Post 460
Auxillary 9past officer of many years), past member of St. Louis
Catholic School Board, St. Louis Catholic School PTC, St. Louis Catholic
School Volunteer, Medina Valley PTO, Catholic Life Branch #17, and
Hermann Sons Castroville Lodge #71. For years Mary Ann was known
in Castroville and the surrounding area as the "Candy
Lady". The Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jim Conway,
Monday, January 28, 2002 at 7 p.m. Rosary was led by Fr. Jim
Conway, Tuesday, January 29, 2002, at 10 a.m. Both services were held at
St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville. Interment followed the Rosary
in St. Louis Catholic Cemetery.
Theodore Stecker
Theodore Joseph Stecker, age 89, of Castroville
passed away January 26, 2002, in Castroville. He was born February
11, 1912, in Anadarko, OK. Mr. Stecker served in the Army and the
Army Air Corps during WWII, and was in the European-African-Middle
Eastern Theater for 36 months. He started teaching and coaching at
the Moye Military Academy in Castroville from 1947 to 1959. He
then taught for 23 years in San Antonio at John B. Hood and DeZavala
Middle Schools until his retirement. He was a member of St. Louis
Catholic Church. Rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Monday, January 28,
at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was at 2 p.m.
Tuesday, January 29, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville.
Interment followed in St. Louis Catholic Cemetery.

Genevive Starr Stieldorf, age 88, of San Antonio
passed away, January 23, 2002. She was born in Jamesville, WI,
April 18, 1913. Genevive was a real estate broker. Graveside
service was at 10 a.m. Friday, January 25, at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood
Section, led by Eugene Soland.

Amada Maria Chapa Torres, age 62, of Grand Prairie
and formerly of Devine, passed Monday, January 7, 2002, in
Arlington. She was born in Devine, October 8, 1939. She was
a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. Funeral service was at
10 a.m. Friday, January 11, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father
Clement DeMeersman officiating. Interment followed in St. Joseph's
Catholic Cemetery.
Mildred Ester Wells
Mildred Ester Wells, age 82, of Kerrville passed away
January 27, 2002 at Hilltop Village in Kerrville. She was born
December 5, 1919 in Panoka, Alberta Canada. Mrs. Wells taught
school at Northeast ISD in San Antonio, Medina Valley ISD at
Castroville, Hondo ISD and retired from Sabinal ISD. Graveside
service was at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, at Sabinal Cemetery
with Rev. David Crabtree officiating.
Manuela R. Ybarra
Manuela R. Ybarra, age 86, of Hondo passed away,
January 29, 2002. She was born in Sabinal, September
17, 1915. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, January
31, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Rev. Jeff Pehl
officiating. . Funeral Mass held
at 10 a.m. Friday, February 1, also at St. John the Evangelist Catholic
Church. Interment followed in Hondo Cemetery, Guadalupe Section.
